Workspaces for the husband and the wife are provided on separate floors; the husband’s study and library on the basement and the wife’s pediatric clinic on the first floor. Both floors are reinforced concrete beam-column structure so that interior space can be easily converted for another use. Light court is located on the north end of the basement, to let light and wind inside the study and library. The beam-column frame on the first floor is enveloped in translucent glass, providing gentle light inside the clinic. The second and third floors are treated as unified space for living, a box-like volume with sub-divided spaces for necessary functions. It is connected by void space above the dining room, and open towards the sky through the skylight above. The residence extends in south-north direction, and exterior void spaces are provided at south and north ends, to let light and wind flow in and out. ‘Public’ function of the house, dining room, kitchen, living room and terrace (used as extended living room), are located on the second floor, loosely divided by stairs and free-standing furniture. By closing sliding doors the living room can be used as guestroom. On the third floor tatami room is located facing the exterior void on the south, and bathroom is located facing the exterior void on the north. Closets and utilities are located along the east wall.
