The clients are a couple in their sixties (husband: freelance literary editor, wife: pediatrician). The site is a residential area near Shinjuku Gyoen Park; 15 minutes walk from the center of Shinjuku district. Requests from the clients were as follows:
(1) Living environment should be simple and minimum, but occasionally children and their families will stay overnight.
(2) Separate work spaces for the two. Study and library for husband, and pediatric clinic for wife. The clinic will be converted for other use.
(3) Library should have capacity for more than 6000 books.
For many years they lived in a traditional Japanese house, where the interior space opens up towards the garden, and rooms are loosely divided by sliding screens.
Considering the above conditions I focused on the following:
(a) Boundary between interior and exterior. Space should have a sense of openness, while the residents' privacy should not be distracted, in urban environment.
(b) Comfortable environment for life and work of an elderly couple. Togetherness and distance between the two. Space should be divided flexibly, so that all their children and grandchildren can stay overnight for family gathering. (No empty guest rooms.)
